The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas BOOK REVIEW!

Title: The Lady of the Camellias

Author: Alexandre Dumas

Year Published: 1848

This classic romantic tragedy is the story of Armand Duval and his everlasting one true love for a courtesan named Marguerite Gautier.

Thought their story doesn't start in a happy place the light of their adventures together is soon seen as Armand recounts the story of his love to a writer. Do you believe in love at first sight? Well Armand probably didn't either until he met Marguerite at the theater. Even from a distance her beauty and elegance quickly slammed right into poor Armand pulling him in to the world of Paris courtesans.

Marguerite couldn't stop herself from falling in love with the odd fellow that was captivated by her glamour. Marguerite is in a tough position in life with no way of supporting herself other than being a courtesan and as you know the first rule to being a courtesan is never fall in love with a client. Marguerite however can't help herself as she falls even deeper in love with Armand and his simplicity. Unfortunately life doesn't come that simple and in order to live her life with Armand she must give up her posh high class position as Armand doesn't possess the fund in order to keep her in her high class lifestyle to which she is used to being.

Even as Armand pulls every string he can in order to keep Marguerite as his own he knows deep down that he can not give her what her rich clients can. Hope is all that Armand has as he tries to live his life with Marguerite by his side but things soon begin to fall apart as Marguerite longs for her former life despite her love for Armand.

Armand feels he might be in over his head but will his love be enough?

Rating:

Thoughts: I enjoyed this book very much even in it's tragic state. This story though very old was easy and fluid like to read and almost felt like watching a movie. I did however have one problem with the story but this might just be my opinion, I found Marguerite's character to be very annoying and narcissistic in her treatment of Armand. If I am being honest the only reason I can see him ever sticking around is if he was a super love sick fool trapped in a spiders web.
